Mechanical Checklist Seminar - information from Jason's presentations on September 30, 2009
Handout: This is a pre-departure checklist that we would recommend for anyone going out on an extended cruise.
Even though our FUBAR mission is to take care of your mechanical needs while underway, we felt obligated to over
prepare you for your journey. This checklist includes much more than just engine items that should be checked.
We have adapted it specifically for the FUBAR boaters.
Powerpoint presentation - Below is a pdf version of Jason's slides
TAKE AWAY POINTS FROM THE SEMINAR:
For those boaters who were unable to make it to the seminars, we would like to hit some highlights from our
presentation. The pre-departure checklist is a recommended "to-do" list. We strongly recommend that you or your
mechanic thoroughly check over the boat and engines right away, thus giving time for needed repairs. Even if you
have a wonderful mechanic for your boat, you should be familiar with how your boat sounds and runs. Look at
everything yourself so you know if/when things are starting to looked cracked, worn, busted. The list of spare
parts we included on this checklist is a hopeful list. Presenters at seminar informed everyone that there will be
part's stores at most of our designated ports. However, you should be prepared for the unexpected during the
trip. Oil -  it
is your engine's life source. Some boats burn off a lot of oil while underway. Have enough oil to keep
your system topped off. Likewise, if there is a malfunction and your engine dumps out oil, you want to be prepared
to fill it back up in route. Fuel treatment - we recommend taking some fuel treatment with you. A trip like this can
break loose junk in your tank and start clogging your filters....which is why we also recommend taking a lot of extra
filters. Fuel polishing - important note if you get your fuel polished before the trip. Do it sooner rather than later.
Use a very good fuel polisher who has great references. A subpar fuel polisher can create more work/hassel than
desired. If chunky, nasty junk is only broken up in the tank, you will need to use a lot of filters to get that muck
out of there. You don't want to be doing that during the trip down to Mexico. Heat exchangers and zincs - your
zincs don't just disappear. They break off and lodge themselves in your heat exchanger. Before the trip you should
have your heat exchanger cleaned out to prevent overheating disasters. Don't forget your dinghy. Many people
don't use the dinghy often. Now is the time to make sure the davit/hoist system is working. Have that dinghy
engine serviced to prevent caughing, sputtering, and smoking. Tools - the list of tools we have on here is very basic.
Jason will not have all of his specialty tools with him for the trip down...we'd need an extra boat for that. He will
have a basic set of tools and is relying on you guys to have boat specific tools.

With that being said, we want to express how much we enjoyed meeting all of you at the seminar. We feel honored
that Val and Kemp have entrusted Jason with this opportunity to work all of you on this adventure. If anyone would
like to ask specific questions, please call us or email us. We would love to help you figure out any conundrums you
may experience while getting ready for the voyage.
